Until quite recently, protein supplements have been developed and manufactured using dated technology that has seen little advancement. Traditional protein bars are produced using the exact same equipment and cold form extrusion manufacturing process as regular candy bars. Once all ingredients are combined, the finished mixture is pressed and left to cool; it is then cut to length and enrobed in a thin layer of a flavored coating. This traditional method of manufacturing is found in almost every protein bar today, and allows for the manufacturing of particular taste and textures profiles.
